Highway 83 Upstream Excursion

A simple way to explore the Ocmulgee by canoe or kayak is to put in at the boat ramp under the Ga Highway 83 bridge. From there you can easily paddle upstream on relatively calm water for a pretty long way (around 8 miles if you so desire), all the way to Wise Creek. Then you can turn around and paddle/float back to the bridge - easy peasy. There is hardly a sign of human habitation along the route, except for the occasional glimpse of a cleared pasture or a train passing along the tracks not far from the western bank of the river.
