Ocmulgee Flats Hunt Camp XC Loop

(Box of Chocolates Ride - a little something for everybody)

The Box o Chocolates cyclocross loop has a little of everything. It starts at Ocmulgee Flats Hunt Camp on FS Road 1099 and early in the ride you will encounter some singletrack. Some of it is almost too difficult for a cyclocross bike (unless you have really good skills). But the flat part along the east bank of the Ocmulgee is non-technical and pretty fast, relatively speaking.

A typical section of the trail along the river once you get to the floodplain section.

After about 5 or 6 miles of singletrack, there’s lots of county dirt road miles with some pavement mixed in. After a stop about halfway through the loop in Monticello at the Vanilla Bean coffee shop, Jordan Road takes you back to the dirt and out of town to the south. Eventually, around mile 40, you enter the Piedmont Wildlife Refuge (PWR) and the roads have a more US Forest Service flavor, including Natural Rock Crossing just before reaching Barron Russell Road. Eventually you re-encounter Hwy 83 and roll back to the Ocmulgee Hunt Camp. We rode it hard and finished in 4 hours and 2 minutes rolling time, but I expect most more mellow tours would take 4:30 or more. It’s a great mix of singletrack, forest service roads, county dirt roads, paved roads, and PWR roads. Something for everybody.
